The First Dance

The first dance can be the highlight of any wedding reception. The father-of-the-bride, bridal party and guests can join in the fun with a well-choreographed agenda. If you have a “seated” dinner, the dancing begins after the dessert has been served. With afternoon weddings, dancing can begin before the bridal party goes to their table. If a buffet is served, the bride and groom may start dancing as soon as they finish greeting their guests in the receiving line.

Then your father-in-law asks you for the second dance, your father, standing at the edge of the dance floor, “cuts in” and completes the dance with you. The groom dances with his mother-in-law, and then his mother during or immediately following your dance. Next, the bride’s father and the groom’s mother dance, and the groom’s father asks the bride’s mother. As your groom dances with the maid-of-honor, you will dance with the best man.
